Questions a careful note-taker should ask

Where do my notes actually live?

In a GitHub repository or Google Drive folder under your own account, as plain .md files with YAML frontmatter and standard [[wikilinks]]. Any markdown editor can open them. MemoRoot connects to that storage; it does not replace it.

What happens to my notes if MemoRoot disappears?

Nothing. There is no export step because there is nothing to export: the files are already in your storage, in a format every tool understands. You would lose the capture and Ask features, not a single note.

What does MemoRoot store on its servers?

Your vault files live in your own GitHub or Google Drive, and MemoRoot's database keeps what the app needs to work: a searchable copy of your note content (powering Search and Ask), your encrypted API key, your settings, task and reminder text, your questions, and usage records. Your vault remains the source of truth, and deleting your account removes everything from our side at once.

Is my data used to train AI models?

No. MemoRoot never trains models on your notes. Your captures and questions are processed by the AI provider you choose (Anthropic by default, or OpenAI, Z.ai, or Google) under your own API key, and your note content is also sent to Voyage AI under MemoRoot's key to generate the embeddings behind Search and Ask. Each provider's API terms govern that processing; none of it is used by MemoRoot for training.

Why do I need my own AI API key?

During early access, MemoRoot is free and you pay the AI provider directly for exactly what you use. For most people that is cents per month. A paid plan with no key setup is planned; bringing your own key will stay free.

Will it mess up my existing vault?

MemoRoot writes new notes as standard markdown and never rewrites notes it did not create unless you edit them in the app. AI-added context lives in clearly labeled sections, so you always know which words are yours.
